A new year gives each of us an opportunity to take a look at our lifestyles and habits and see what we want to grow or change to align with our goals and values. Â
First, ask yourself some simple questions to help you identify what is important to you and develop small and achievable goals in different areas of your life.
Health and Fitness. What would you like to change or improve about your health this year? Do you want to lose some amount of weight, make a change in your blood pressure or strength, eat food that better feeds your body or drink more water?Â
Career and Professional. How would you like to improve, adjust or adapt in work this year? Are you looking for a new step in your career, to improve your skills or develop expertise, to have more experiences or improve your dynamic with your boss or co-workers?
Personal Development. What is something you’d like to learn about, try or grow better at this year? Do you have an interest in trying something creative, developing a new skill, or getting more education about a subject or area?
Financial Goals. How would you like to stabilize, grow or invest your finances this year? Do you have a number you’d like to reach in savings, debt you want to pay off, a fund or account you’d like to open to plan for the future?
Relationships and Social. What relationships are important to you? How would you like to begin or deepen relationships this year? Is there a person you want to know better, a group or activity you’d like to participate in to meet people with similar interests, or a relationship you’d like to deepen?
Second, take the time to set a small goal in each area based on your answers to the above questions. For example, if you want to drink more water, perhaps you will set a goal of having one full glass of water before you start the day or before you have a cup of coffee or soda. Or, you can set a goal for the number of ounces of water you want to consume every day.
Third, take a step today to help set your plans into motion. For example, if you set a goal to take an art class for personal development, find one near you and sign up today. Or, if you want to deepen your friendship with someone, send them a text or call them to set up a lunch or fun activity in the next month. You are much more likely to keep going once you get the ball rolling.
You have the ability to continue to grow and change. Consider this your reminder that every year is a new opportunity to choose how you want to step towards that growth!
